To which wine review publications do you subscribe?
Campbell Mattinson - Winefront Website
Winewise Magazine
Jeremy Oliver - Onwine Website
Winestate Magazine
James Halliday - Wine Companion Website
Burghound Website
eRobert Parker/Wine Advocate
More than one but only Australian i.e. Winefront, Onwine, Winewise
More than one but a mix of International and Australian i.e. Burghound, Winefront
Other (not listed)
None

I’m curious about many things generally, but in this instance specifically about cross readership, the value of information and opinion and the interest of Winorama readers in specific wine review publications that charge a subscription fee. My poll technology is not sufficiently advanced to allow multiple selections (or I’m not smart enough to work it out) which is why I have included the more than one option for Australian and International sites. Feel free to vote if it interests you….and no we are not planning on charging any subscription fees for a good while yet…if at all.

Sauvignon Blanc Wednesday, Aug 30 2006

Do you drink sauvignon blanc?
Yes - I like it and drink it regularily
Sometimes - When I'm in the right mood I quite fancy a glass.
No - Absolutely not! (unless maybe I am very desperate)

I asked a few people if they would like to come along and taste some sauvignon blanc and some of the responses were - ‘Yeah right!’, ‘Pfffffffftttt’ and ‘Enjoy yourself’
So from this I gather that the ‘wine cognoscenti’ don’t drink much of the stuff. On the other hand the people in the office were very enthusiastic about the grape. It would seem that the ‘punters’ still love it. Look at the way Oyster Bay flies out of the bottle shop fridge and off restaurant winelists. I like the odd glass myself when the weather turns warmer. I find a cold crisp glass with its simple and direct flavours often really hits the spot. Anyway I had a quick root through the boxes in my office and extracted the following wines to taste and review over the next day or two -

2005 Brokenwood Forest Edge (Orange)
2006 Secret Stone (Marlborough)
2006 Montana (Marlborough)
2006 Wirra Wirra (Adelaide Hills)
and Lincoln has
2005 Arrowfield Authors (King Valley)

Australian shiraz viognier blends Tuesday, May 2 2006

Overall I think the trend of adding viognier to shiraz is ?
Good
Bad

I am deliberately restricting the choice to good and bad because I want the voting to reflect the ‘on balance’ opinion. i.e. Is the addition of viognier more often than not too much of a good thing in Australia? I don’t mind the barest hint but generally don’t think local shiraz needs the help.

Australia’s best dry white Friday, Apr 14 2006

Australia's best dry white
Chardonnay
Riesling
Semillon
Other

Time for another poll… Penfolds decided that chardonnay was the great white hope and produced Yattarna. Serious people, of course, realise that Hunter Semillon is Australia’s greatest white wine. Margaret River chardonnay and Eden Valley riesling must be very close in the running though. This should be interesting…

The last red grape on earth Saturday, Mar 18 2006

The last red grape
Shiraz/Syrah
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Pinot Noir
Tempranillo
Nebbiolo
Sangiovese
Grenache
Other

Not had a poll for a while so I thought I would pose a little hypothetical in order to establish the tastes of our readers. Imagine if you will that a virus is about to wipe out all the red grape varieties in the world - and yes I know it is a very gloomy thought. You have just enough time to grab a cutting from one variety. The virus will pass in exactly two weeks and you can have your cutting of choice replanted anywhere in the world i.e. your pinot can be planted in Burgundy, your shiraz in the Hunter :) ..so what you take is what you get to drink… I am guessing that we may have a pinot noir crowd but I could be wrong. I oscillate wildly between pinot, nebbiolo, cabernet and merlot….very hard to choose.

Leave it alone

Stew asks here for less Australian and more Spanish and Italian reviews. Is he just an oppressed minority?
