Delatite Devils River Cabernet Merlot 2002 Thursday, Oct 12 2006

Delatite Cabernet MerlotSome people like to taunt me. So friends Len and Faye dropped in with this wine, a Cabernet and awaited my response. The area is pretty cool and although it gets very hot days, if it was my place I would not be growing Cab. It has a nice green pepper/cassis nose. But it was not over the top green pepper/herbaceous. The year had a pretty cool lead up to vintage so this is a pretty good start. The palate had the same fruit plus a nice kick of dusty oak. Palate is long and the Cab flavour is not over the top. It was OK before food but with food it was even better. So if they can do a clean wine like this in a cool year how do they go in warmer years? Over to you Winoramistas.

Tyrrells Old Winery Cabernet Merlot 2003 Wednesday, Apr 26 2006

Old WineryI think this is a record for Winorama - McLaren Vale 67%, Mudgee 24%, Alpine Valley 4.6%, Limestone Coast 4.3%, Pyrenees 3.3%, Hunter Valley 2.3%.

Crimson red. Aromas of red berry, spice and a light smoky earthy character - a bit like a Graves actually. On the palate it is only medium bodied with red berry, blackcurrant and those earthy characters again. Dry sandy tannins and a palate cleansing dry, somewhat abrupt, finish with some alcohol warmth. This is a serviceable dinner claret style and I like it for that. You can’t really complain at the price either.
