Wild Soul Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

I had not heard of this winery until last night, not that I have my finger on the pulse of the Granite Belt, but I suspect like many other people, I just don’t buy or drink much wine from this area. And you thought the Hunter had an image problem! Well the wine was uncorked and revealed aromas of red plums, vanilla, animal hide, dried meat and dried spices. The palate showed red cherries and red plums, leather and creamy oak with a touch of carbon/graphite. Good length and quite tasty. A very nice wine, though not particular Cabernetish in character, and it did taste a little bretty to my palate.

Bald Mountain Reserve Shiraz Cabernet 2000 Thursday, Jun 29 2006

Bald Mountain

A very pleasant nose - juicy black cherries and raspberries, a whiff of leather, some savouriness, a bit of fleshy green stalks and spice. The palate is nicely balanced with red fruits and a light shake of pepper, acid, and oak somewhere in the distance. Very good length too. It is on the lighter side, but it is not thin - an honest effort.

Boireann Merlot 2004 Monday, Feb 13 2006

boireannThis is more of a story about buying a bottle of wine than drinking said bottle.  The other day I popped into the Wine Emporium and asked Tony (Harper) to sell me a Queensland wine.  He likes championing the local product and reckons Boireann is one of the best producers.  And as I had previously tried the Mourvedre-Shiraz-Grenache blend, he suggested I try the Merlot.  Me and merlot?  Hmmmm – I wasn’t convinced.  If there were a challenger to Barossa Valley floor Riesling for the unfashionable wine award, then perhaps Granite Belt Merlot could be a contender.

And so it was opened: deli meats and matchstick; a tinder dry palate, some red fruits submerged in a bowl of rubber.  I think it needs to go straight into quarantine.  Eight hours later, there were still lots of smallgoods and some red fruits, the palate was arid and it was starting to oxidise.  Cork in the bottle and bottle in the fridge – time to move on.  (Luckily, this was purchased from a fine wine store, and I should not have any problems getting the bottle replaced)
