Winorama & The Wine Front Announcement Monday, Aug 4 2008
LEADING Australian online wine information sites The Wine Front and Winorama today announced that they were joining forces to create what is likely to be Australia’s most active wine review site. This site will run under The Wine Front banner.
The Wine Front has been published by Campbell Mattinson under the www.winefront.com.au address since early 2002. Its articles have won widespread acclaim (it won the 2005 Wine Press Club Wine Communicator Award and is a two-time finalist at the World Food Media Awards) and is one of only a very few commercially-successful wine information sites in Australia.
Winorama has been published by Gary Walsh under the www.winorama.com.au address over the past three years. While it’s true that Winorama’s information has been free-of-charge, its success has been remarkable: in just three years interest in the site has soared to the point where today it records nearly 50,000 unique visitors per month. One of the great successes of Winorama has been its daily interaction with the wine loving community – a feature also available on The Wine Front site.
By moving under the one banner Mattinson and Walsh believe they will publish an average of between 200 and 500 detailed wine reviews each month – on top of ongoing news and feature articles and videos. In Australia today there is no online source that comes anywhere close to this number of current reviews – and crucially, the wines are reviewed as the wines are released (i.e. when the wines are available for sale).
Mattinson said, “Over the past five years we’ve steadily emailed each other half a dozen times per day – and we have very similar philosophies on how wine should be reviewed. In the end the decision to co-publish a site was simply a natural progression. It just happened. The best thing is that subscribers to the site should see a lot of action.”
Walsh said, “Like any good wedding, this is happy and jolly day for me, but also tinged with sadness as I say (for the larger part of my work) goodbye to Winorama. But it’s time to move on and get serious about creating the biggest and best wine review site in Australia. Campbell and I are a natural fit, he’s both a great writer and a taster for whom I have the highest regard, and we see eye to eye on most things…at least most of the time. It’s an honour to team up with him. And like big Kev..I’m excited! “
Walsh and Mattinson will clearly mark who has reviewed what – though in a quirky innovation they’ll also publish “Double-Take” reviews where they both review the same wine, side by side.
“I’ve long since loved the way Margaret (Pomeranz) and David (Stratton) review films – I reckon there’s a place for this style of reviewing in wine, in print. With Gary Walsh as the co-publisher of The Wine Front it gives us the perfect and easy opportunity to do just that. I also hope that this move brings Walsh to a new audience – he’s not only an outstanding taster of wine, but he’s got a unique take on things.” Mattinson said.
Subscriptions to The Wine Front cost $39.95 per annum. See http://www.winefront.com.au/subscribe-to-winefront

As long as the search functionality of particularly Campbell’s site improves, I will be happy!

I 2nd that Adair. As a subscriber to both Winefront and Jeremy Oliver’s site, I can vouch that it’s a hell of alot easier to find things on JO’s. Good luck with the the new venture GW.

When is this going to start up? (i.e., the GW contribution).I rather liked the name “Winorama”, it sort of made fun of wine snobbery.
Will there be a ‘question and answer’ chatty function (not familiar with Wine Front layout)? that’s one of the best bits of Winorama, i.e., the information sharing.
Tell me, did you write your own press release?? Sounds like the sort of platitudinous rubbish that I’m supposed to have said in interviews but really didn’t!
In all, a logical step and though some might be a bit upset, I’d like to thank GW for doing this for free for some time - as he built up market share!! Best wishes.

FWIW - The Wine Front has a Reply section similar to Winorama.

All the very best GW. Very much looking to following the new venture.
So does this mean you’ll be growing a beard, Stratts-style?

No. I’m working on a ‘terrier-like’ hairdo.

What will happen to all the accumulated wisdom stored herein? I think there is value in keeping it somewhere in the aether.

Winorama will be free and all the content will be accessible. It will also continue to be updated probably a couple of times a week but with the odd import and things from the cellar mainly. It’s become a great deal of work for little return other than on an emotional level - which is still really satisfying - but more than I imagined. Subscription to the new site is 77c per week. Hopefully the opinion contained within is worth that much…..

As a subscriber to Wine Front and a daily visitor to Winorama over the past few years, I think that the combination of Campbell and Gary should work very well. Thanks Gary for the contribution you made to Australian wine with Winorama.

Thanks Ray and Hamish,
Also I should add that the Winorama format is a bit of a burden for getting volume out. It was designed for one a day whereas now I taste 10 or more wines a day and I reckon I can more of them up much faster on Wine Front without all the formatting overheads of Winorama.

Have you and Campbell considered the marketing move that RB did when he moved to a subscription service. For those subscribing by a certain date, capping the subscription at that amount for a set number of years, to attract a large number of new subscribers. FWIW I would recommend every regular Winoramista become a subscriber to Wine Front, as it was certainly worth more than the money spent, and will mort than doubly so now.

Given the quantity and quality of content that will be published through this partnership, $39.99 per annum is a dead-set bargain.
August 4th, 2008 at 6:12 pm| Quote |
Though I wonder if we’ll have the option to pay more to block Gary’s reviews and see only Campbell’s?
:-)

Just looked on Wine Front and not exactly sure how to sign up. But then I’m not great at technology … I’ll look into it on Wednesday when I’m free.

I agree strongly with the comments above re the functionality of Winorama vs WineFront. I am a subscriber to both but find the search facility and RSS feed on Winorama very useful. There is an opportunity for the combined websites to become the premier Aus wine critique site in the world provided the functionality is improved. Also, how about doing a deal with CellarTracker?

There has already been some discussion of moving to a whizz bang new platform in coming months - once things get bedded down a little more (so to speak). It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

Excellent news guys. We should have been paying for Winorama years ago. All the best on the new venture.
But promise me you’ll leave the videos to Campbell…or at least do them in your tasting cape.

Oh wow!
Can I just say as a newbie to wine I found winorama a great and unintimidating resource and forum. Amazingly i’ve never been on or seen winefront. perhaps to encourage new subscribers like i would’ve been when i first looked here, to have a trial period, where people can view the forums. otherwise you may only get the dedicated and diehards alcos…

It’s 40 dollars a year guys…I’m a known quantity at the very least. Your call. I reckon at the minimum the work I have done here for the last few years is worth 70c a week. Less than the minimum wage!
GW
PS. I’ve put 14 reviews up there today alone…

I’ve not bothered to subscribe to WF to now but I guess I will be in the imminent future.
Thanks for all of your (and Linc and David’s) efforts here Gary. I’ve typically left Winorama ’til last when viewing the wine sites/fora I visit daily (well, almost daily) - saving the best for last, so to speak.
The number of your notes has been a bit variable at times but the discussions that ensue have often been interesting and at times illuminating.
I’m hoping that your collaboration with Campbell will be much more successful and longlasting than the old Winepros site. Best of luck to you both - I’ll follow WF with interest.
Cheers

Congratulations on the partnership - as with MichaelC, disappointing that there’s no “orama” in the site’s name.
Thanks for all the great information over the last few years - especially the smart(arse) and pithy comments. Hopefully in the short term before the re-vamped WineFront you can get the alc percentage included in the reviews.
Best wishes for the future.

ps also thanks to Linc + David for their contributions.

Congratulations on the partnership!
I was actually thinking the other day about whether there were any commercial aspirations on the horizon - it reminded me a lot about Neal Martin’s wine journal. Fortunately for me this time, I have a winefront subscription.
And yes, thanks also to Lincoln and David for their reviews.

Fax sent and subscription received a mere 10 minutes later, quick service! Should have subscribed long ago, but this was a good incentive.
Good luck in the new venture!!!

Looks like a match made in heaven. We hope that the best of both sites come together in an all improved model.
You are both terrific wine communicators and have made a very big and enjoyable contribution over the last few years.
Best of luck and thanks also to David and Lincoln.
PS will David have a cameo role?

subscription completed and paid, now all I need to do is switch my homepage from winorama to winefront…shouldn’t take a minute! I will miss the old winorama, but it seems like a very good alternative…

Good luck Gary, I’ve been reading both reviews for a while now and it seems like a logical union, it’s hard to find good wine writers, with reasonable palates.

A couple of points: Can you make sure Campbell doesn’t review any Zinfandel, and is there any way of isolating funds due to Gary so that it goes to his wife and kid rather than to the purchase of Hunter wines? :-p

GW,
Thanks for the blood sweat and tears that have made winorama the great success it has been. The pairing with Campbell sounds inspired and inspiring.
Best of luck.

GW,
many thanks for a huge contribution to quality Oz woine, and the pithy, engaging style with which you communicate it. As a regular visitor to both sites I have always been surprised by the comparative lack of posting and banter on Winefront, and hope the new format sees a happy combination of punter participation and editorial. Me thinks a powerhouse is born!

Ok, we’ve had it too good for too long. This web site has been in my top 2 web sites (along with demonland.com) for a while now. $40 is a high price to pay (could have scored myself a Kooyong Pinot for that!) but I’ve just transferred my loyalty to winefront. Look forward to the new joint venture.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:36 am| Quote |
Well dentists bills are expensive - and I’m English so naturally have dodgy teeth to start.
On the upside, if the Kooyong happened to be total dogs breath (unlikely) we might have saved you a bob or two. Which reminds me I need to get that out and taste it..

hey gary
one hand typing here as ive got right hand in a cast, but what i meant to say before which you may have misunderstood is — the free and accessible forum of winorama is good for new winos. who are green and want to feel it out. once you know the value of this forum $40 is nothing to pay, i agree.
therefore as a business idea it may be good to continue encouraging those who are new to wine to read the forums and realise the benefit. then both sides win– winefront gets itself a subscriber, the new wine nerd finds a home.

My reviews on winefront are currently free by the way. I’m still not exactly sure what you are saying. I’m a simple man

i was referring to subscription to winefront at $40/annum which was discussed here. haven’t checked it out yet so i may be missing some crucial info.
August 5th, 2008 at 5:48 pm| Quote |
what i meant (again) was that i understood from this post that winefront costs $40/year while winorama has been free. the free aspect of winorama has been a good unintimidating forum for me as a wine newbie. and i think for other newbies to wine too. it would be a shame to not attract that crowd to a paid site like winefront. i was wondering out loud if there’s a way to avoid deterring that crowd.
if your reviews (and the forums) there are free, or some will remain free, that’s a good way to get the (as yet) undedicated on board. now for more drugs….

Great news. A big tip of the hat to GW and team who have led me by the browser to some ripping wine selections in recent years.
Will you leave a banner over Winorama site stating “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”?
August 6th, 2008 at 9:42 am| Quote |
Ha ha. Thanks. No Winorama will continue to run but in a restricted state. The nature of the tastings will change too. It will be a mix of stuff from the cellar and imports and odds and ends. Maybe an update a week..or what I can find time for. And of course all the reviews that are currently here will stay open and available for the foreseeable future - although no promises.

Gary, while you’re busy moving in the commercial direction (no criticism of that, btw, just very sad to see Winorama scaled back and yet another great free Internet resource lost) I hope you’ll collect royalties for your work, which I notice was quoted by Kemeny’s in their SMH advert today (p15). Most of your Majella Coonawarra Cab 2006 review is quoted!
August 9th, 2008 at 3:31 pm| Quote |
There are no royalties for quoting someone. If there were, no one would pay and then no one would send wine samples. It’s a courtesy to ask someone first though.

Can also be good publicity for a novice like Gary.

Hmmm .. i only just got onto this site a couple of weeks ago. And having just had a look at WineFront i must say that i like the informal feel of this site. WineFront looks a little to formal for my likeing. I don’t suppose you have thought of selling this name Gary to someone else who might like to keep this site going?
