A big box of corks Monday, Jun 5 2006

Here’s a little competition for you. Guess the number of corks in the box and the Winorama management will send you 2 bottles of prostigious 2004 Marius Simpatico shiraz as a reward for your renowned estimation skills. Closest guess at 9pm on 19 June 2006 (that’s two weeks from now) wins first prize. A mystery bottle from the cellars of Winorama will be the second place prize. Post a response with your best guess but make it good as you only get one chance! Unfortunately, it should be noted that the wine can only be posted to an Australian address. Good luck Winoramistes!

Guessing is for fools and the ill-advised. Can I pay someone to come around and count them??

422.
P.S. Wizz is an actuary and should not be allowed to enter any such contest on the grounds of unfairness.
June 6th, 2006 at 12:27 am
I had our entire quant division calculate my number, so surely wizz is ok?
June 6th, 2006 at 6:25 am

I run a quant department. I know how good Antonios answer will be.
I have a box and a lot of corks at home. I’ll be doing simulations on the weekend.

You are taking this far too seriously.

You guys guzzle nothing but Euro and want to put up a couple of bottles of Aussie shiraz you don’t want!
I’ll happily take them off your hands…400 corks.
June 6th, 2006 at 1:52 pm
We do want them! The Marius has been our house wine for some time. I am on to my second case…I can’t recommend it strongly enough.
We have not decided the second prize yet..the wine from the cellar…

June 6th, 2006 at 2:24 pm

389 for the luck of a poor man
June 6th, 2006 at 2:30 pm
What they are not telling you fools is that he has a small plastic bucket inverted and hidden in the box just to throw out the actuarians.
June 6th, 2006 at 2:38 pm
No no no.
No plastic bucket.
We are not anti-actuarianistes.
June 6th, 2006 at 3:28 pm
My guess is 656
June 6th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
712 is my stab in the dark.

June 6th, 2006 at 4:11 pm
After being ‘Blinded By The Light’ whilst talking to the ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’, I decided with a ‘Hungry Heart’ that the number 273 is correct.
Do I have any confidence in saying this? How can I? I am half Irish, half Italian and was raised Catholic.
Note: my wife is actually half Italian and half Irish and has been raised as a catholic. Her name is Kathryn and she is adorable.
June 6th, 2006 at 5:04 pm
Yes, I have also been into the Simpatico and another 2 bottles will not go astray!
June 6th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
Sounds like she’s a lucky girl Anth
June 6th, 2006 at 5:36 pm
Depends what you call lucky. Her favourite drink is French champagne
and has taken a liking th 90 Krug.
June 6th, 2006 at 5:49 pm
Ok.. swap lucky with impeccable taste
June 6th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
Could you two please put a cork in it!
GW
June 6th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
581 corks
June 6th, 2006 at 7:44 pm
My calculated value, using a compression ratio of 0.6489 and a prediction of 8.78% champers vs others within a defined grange 6 pack wooden box comes in at 549 corks.
June 6th, 2006 at 7:52 pm

June 6th, 2006 at 9:02 pm
Seeing this the the cast off bin for corks in a night of boozing for GW I think you will all surely find that the number of corks is nearer the 186 mark. GW’s ability to hit the mark when not sober means there SHOULD be more in the box, but to this time.
