2005 Rieslings Thursday, Dec 22 2005
Tasting Notes and Australia and Great Southern and Eden Valley and Variety and White and riesling
Just a quick list of 2005 Rieslings that I have tried and a brief impression -
Leo Buring Eden Valley - Beautiful and pure. Cheap as chips. Buy it by the case.
O’Leary Walker Polish - Lovely intense flavour.Good balance. Excellent.
O’Leary Walker Watervalue - Bit broad. Pass
Seppelt Drumborg - To paraphrase the great Mark Kopec - at the moment this one is a bit like kissing a mirror. Leave it in the cellar for many years. No rewards now. Excellent.
Grosset Polish - Beautiful. Crystal clear. Long. Superb.
Kilikanoon Morts Block - Yes. A bit of reduction. Flavoury. Very good to excellent.
Pewsey Vale - Well priced. Touch sweet and rich and lacks focus. A pleasant drink though. Open bottle still good on subsequent days.
Plantagenet Riesling - Banana, sweet lemon, spice and hints of botrytis. Attractive lemony palate with soft but balanced acidity. Good length but a touch phenolic on the finish. Drink: Now-2008. 90 points.
I am sure I have missed quite a few but anyway. Petaluma and Mesh and many more to come over summer.

A 2005 blind riesling or any riesling. Do the OLW PH if you can. It is only about $17. Very good stuff. I have a six pack on the purchase list.

Good summary in which I am mostly in agreement.
2005 Seppelt Drumborg is my number one, with the 2005 Grosset Polish Hill up there if you look at it in a certain light. The 2005 Seppelt Drumborg is a powerful monster. I found the 2005 O’Leary Walker Polish Hill to have a sick-wheat gluten character that I was not fond of, but have another bottle to re-try. The 2005 Petaluma did not do much for me, but it hasn’t since 2002 although Murray has been a fan of a few. Still have 2005 Leonay EV in the cellar to try and will grab a 2005 Mesh when I see it.

Oh, and had the 2005 Leo Buring EV standard on the weekend which was a lovely drink for both wine novice and expert alike. Harmony, focus with good power and lovely fine, powdery finish.

I knew I had missed a few. That LB Mount Barker sounds good. I might get Fosters to send one through…
I think I must have missed that “sick wheat gluten ” character in the 05 OLW Polish. I will get a third bottle to see if I can see what you are on (about).

Its going to be 2005 rieslings only. I am a big fan of the leo buring eden valley, I think thats the best value for money wine I have come across to date.

Gary,
have you tried the Grosset Watervale? All the fuss seems to be over the Polish at the moment. Is it that much better than Watervale?
cheers,
DM

Hello,
No not yet. I keep meaning to try one and then grabbing a Polish. Will get to one over the next few weeks though. My tastes usually lean to Polish or Eden rather than Watervale.

I have had the Watervale. It too is quite wonderful and I reckon many people will like it better than the Polish Hill, especially if served blind.

OK. Had the 2005 Petaluma over XMAS. Very fragrant. Bit of a tarts handkerchief. Quite soft and flavoursome. Not as good as the 2002. Lovely in its own way but not my bag. I will drink a few more bottles over summer but most likely not buy any for the cellar.

Gary, the Petaluma might have been a bit sophisticated for your palate, have you tried Blue Nun?

Also the 05 Helm Riesling from Canberra and 05 Castle rock from Porongurop (?).

I have had the 05 Crawford River twice. Is nice.
I like Black Tower best…from out of the black comes the white! Brilliant stuff.
