Tasting Notes and Spain and Variety and Sweet

This has been open for almost two weeks now, and not surprisingly as it is a Solera wine it can stand a bit of oxidation. This is labelled as Dulce Viejo. The nose is intensely raisined and sweetly perfumed, with treacle and dried pears, and an incredible richness. The palate shows a crazy golden syrup sweetness, sticky and cloying, amazingly concentrated, with old wood characters but also a certain freshness. Very good but lacks a bit of interest.

Strangely, there are two different Alvear PX wines out of the 1927 solera. It looks like you’ve been trying the 750ml job (about $35 in Oz), but the good gear is what goes into the 375ml bottle (and is $40 a pop). I had this in Perth recently and loved it. The half bottle version is also the one Parker reviewed:

The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Huge and viscous, yet neither cloyingly sweet nor heavy, it is a profound effort priced unbelievably low. It is meant to be drunk alone at the end of a meal.

The 375ml wine sounds much better. I will keep an eye out for it.

Geez that is cheap. $35 for 750ml and even $40 for $375ml.

PS is spot on.
My understanding is that the 750ml come from a 20 year solera system as opposed to a 60 year system for the halves. Must be a nightmare trying to differentiate between the two when they are both called the same thing and the 750ml is cheaper!

I’ve bought the 375 ml from H&C Cellars in Wembley. I think you know where that is…

It is a very sweet wine that you would have with dessert or cheese
