Anakena ONA Syrah 2004 Tuesday, Jul 3 2007
Tasting Notes and Chile and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
I have a box of wines from local importer Fine Wines Of The Americas to review and thought I’d kick things off with a Syrah. Lovely to see more and more imports hitting the shelves.
Aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry, pepper, green capsicum, eucalyptus and attractive creamy oak. The little sulphide pong subsides and licorice richness emerges with airing. On the palate medium to full bodied with flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, spice, herb and some meaty characters. Good flavours. Very highly extracted with mouth-carpeting black tea tannins and spicy meaty finish. This really needs a juicy piece of meat to help tame those tannins.

I had a Syrah from Conchy a Toro 12 mths ago (May 25?) that sounds very similar except, the fruit was not as bright. Same sulphide pong. It was $13 a bottle and not something I wanted to revisit. So how long was it before it blew off GW?

Not sure. It subsided certainly but perhaps not entirely. I don’t mind a bit of sulphide..

David, was that the Diablo jobbie that Coles brought in? I read a few negative reviews of it.

Yep, see my Winorama review by selecting Chile and its one of the first wines from Chile, May 25, 2006 see here Doc mentioned in the comments that Conchy a Toro Export 10 million cases a year and also that the 2005 was much better than the 2004 that I tried. Haven’t heard from Doc for a while, trust he is still well?
