Antinori Pèppoli Chianti Classico 2004
By Gary Walsh
I don’t write up a lot of the things I actually drink (time/motivation) and I don’t drink a lot of the things I write up (capacity/preference) and I don’t write up a lot of the things I don’t drink either (quality/interest/time). Confused? So am I. Anyway, I was cooking Italian for some friends the other night and thought this would be just the ticket. I am doing the note from memory but reckon I have the measure of it.
Pleasingly rustic with ripe cherry and plum, licorice, coffee and a bit of the farmyard. On the palate medium bodied but with plenty of weight and flavours of cherry, strawberry conserve, licorice and some dried herbs contributing a slight Campari-like bitterness. It has some firmish tannins that soften with air and feels nice and thick in the mouth. Good finish too. A very nice wine and one I’d drink now to best enjoy the fruit.
