Arakoon Lighthouse Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Sunday, Aug 27 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and McLaren Vale and Variety and Red and cabernet et al

There must be an interesting anecdote explaining why this wine is called the ‘Lighthouse’. Unfortunately, I don’t know what it is. Now the McLaren is better known for its Shiraz (and Grenache), so to find a Cabernet like this one was quite a surprise.
Black/red in colour. Dusty and leafy, almost minty, with cedary oak, cigar box, red currants, maybe some black currants; on the face of it, it is varietal. The palate is rich, tending more towards plump ripe red currants and red plums, with cedar, coffee grounds, and lovely ripe tannins. The palate is big, but it maintains some balance, heavier and weightier that you would normally find a Cabernet to be, but a fine wine no doubt. A wine that belies its origins, and excellent value at $20.

The label gets its name from the area near Arakoon in northern NSW (north of Port Macquarie) Approaching the village of Arakoon at night via the road beside the Macleay River, you can see the Smoky Cape Lighthouse glinting in the dark for about 35 kms before you reach Arakoon. This is what inspired our label. As simple as that. A visit to this lighthoue at night is inspiring - eerie and aweinspiring. And that is before you open the bottle of Lighhouse Cab you had with you in the car!
