Arrowfield Estate ‘The Authors’ Cabernet Merlot 2004
By Gary Walsh
This is one of a new range of wines just released by Arrowfield Estate called ‘The Authors’. They are all priced at $16.99. I have knocked off the two reds first - it’s cold. The cabernet merlot is a blend of fruit from McLaren Vale, King Valley and the Hunter Valley. A strange brew no doubt, but one that works particularily well here, and at this price point I am more inclined to look for a good drink rather than regionality.
Aromas of cassis, tobacco, earth and a little chocolate and mint. A good smelling wine with perhaps a tiny whiff of the stable adding some complexity. On the palate it has flavours of ripe blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco and earth. Round and quite sweet with fine soft tannins and a finish of good length with a rather tasty blackcurrant and tobacco aftertaste. This is a full flavoured ‘drink me now’ cabernet blend that offers plenty of complexity and interest for well under a lobster.
