Tasting Notes and Australia and Coonawarra and Variety and Red and cabernet et al

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
..or sheep as is the case with the name of this wine. I am pretty good at counting sheep. It’s one of my many incredible and varied skills. I tasted this wine over three days and it showed no signs of tiring and I never heard it counting sheep either.
A complex mix of red and black berries, blackcurrant, licorice, earth and lots of spicy clove and cedar oak with a touch of cooling menthol. On the palate full bodied with red and black berry, cassis, dark chocolate and tobacco flavours backed with a large helping of high quality cedar oak. Intense, tightly coiled and packed full of energy with very strong but ripe tannins and a long tannic finish. A mighty Coonawarra cabernet and yes, it’s well worth the money.

Just seems to be lacking the points on the 04, not just with your review but with all who have reviewed it. Any idea why?

..because 2005 is just too tannic…not supple or enticing as the 2004

I have only had the 2004 once in a very rapid blind tasting so can’t really comment. It is a cellaring style of cabernet…it is supposed to be tannic.

Gary,
probably silly question but..
05 cullen vs 05 tally
both good vintages and same ish price point
decision???

Either. Both top wines for the cellar but bearing this in mind I’d lean towards the Cullen due to the screwcap closure.

I have already got my Cullen but i am tossing up on the Tally this vintage. Maybe a couple of bottles will cover it.
Cullen over the past decade must be fast approaching the very top of Australian wine. It makes many more expensive Shiraz examples look pretty average.

I agree. It tends to sell through pretty quickly too so I’d not muck about too much.
