Battely Syrah 2004 Monday, Apr 17 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Beechworth and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Outrageously floral - lavender, violets, white flowers then roast meat, spices, dark cherry, blackberry liqueur, apricot, stalk and creamy French oak. On the palate medium to full bodied with a gorgeous silky texture. Cool (mentholated) flavours of dark cherry and bramble fruit, sweet roast meat, spices and attractive stalky characters. The tannins are slinky and ripe with acidity that adds freshness and leaves the palate refreshed and cleansed - ready for another big sip. Outstanding length. This is scented, balanced and a textural marvel. This is the real deal.

It’s a beautiful wine.
Russell has come through with the goods - this is his best wine so far, by some margin.
I don’t know whether Parker will like it or not - it’s not like either of his 2001 or his 2003 (the Parker 96 pointers), its style closer to (but better than) his 2002.

I had the 2002…I like this a lot more…and I think Le Bob will go for it. I have some 2004 Giaconda on order too..how do you think this stacks up?

2004 Battely is thicker and riper than 2004 Giaconda - they’re quite different. Both outstanding.

You may find it too floral, ripe and sweet. i.e. do you like Run Rig?

Battely has lots of spice but it’s at the warmest edge of the region, and the wines reflect that. I liked the 2002 but I never got too excited over it - Parker got this one right. More a wine of promise than a wine of arrival.

Will you be supplying cigars and smoking jackets? Not coming otherwise.

Initially gave this 97. JP agreed…and now I think on it - in the cool light of day - the more I think that was the right number. Best shiraz I have had in many a month..

Gary, did this spend any time in the big glass jug before tasting or straight into it?

Hi John,
Tasted from Riedel Shiraz stems over an hour or two…but I must confess to drinking it far too quickly…
