Brown Magpie Modewarre Mud Shiraz 2004 Monday, Jul 7 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Bellarine and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
A lot of news in the media recently about Rockbank Shiraz judged as the worlds best shiraz. It was from the so called Melbourne Dress Circle vintage of 2004. I have not tasted the Rockbank but have tried many 2004 Shiraz from the dress circle and they have all been excellent. I received this wine as a present and opened it with no preconceptions and was stunned by its mix of elegance, style and cool climate shiraz. It opens with a mix of white pepper, cinnamon and cloves on the nose. The palate is very silky shows a creamy texture as the flavours waft across the taste buds. The mix of white pepper, red berry fruit, clove and a creamy texture has great persistence, excellent. It is not a heavy wine and it has great balance.

Liked it better than the Langi?
Did they send you the 2005 vintage as well? The 2004 seems to be almost all gone and 2005 is on sale.

I buy most wines and this was the first Shiraz from this mob that I have tried. I have tried the Langi 05 and would prefer this wine.

Cracked one of these last night (it is still available ex winery). Seemed a trifle heavy on the oak for me, perhaps in part responsible for the creamy texture? Good wine, but more in the 90-91 imho.
