Brown Magpie Pinot Noir 2004 Wednesday, Dec 19 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Geelong and Variety and Red and pinot noir

A blend of 100% estate grown fruit, using the varieties 114, 115 and MV6. Handpicked and aged in French and Hungarian oak barriques. Aromas of cherries and earth, a bit of fennel, tomato and leaf. With time, there was a hint of vanish too. The palate showed red cherries, tomato fruit, some eponymous brownness, with a bit of sap and acid on the finish. Nicely textured with good length, and seems to be showing some age (or at least this bottle was) so I would drink them now. Good value too.

There is a fine line between a wine possessing character and a faulty wine. I would agree with all that Lincoln has described about this wine but would see this instead as a prematurely aged, volatile wine coming from green or shaded fruit. Having said that, the Magpie Estate Pinots also received some pretty good reviews in a publication recently (Gourmet Traveller Wine Mag maybe?) so possibly I am being harsh. Incidently, I noticed that Pinot is the second most reviewed varietal (and possibly the most reviewed single variety since it is Shiraz ET AL that leads it) - does this reflect a search for the Holy Grail?

I think it largely reflects the fact that both Lincoln and David are Pinot nuts…I’d like to see Cabernet have No.1 billing…
