Castagna Genesis Syrah 2004 Tuesday, May 23 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Beechworth and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

This one is fresh off the truck. An engaging nose: sweet spicy fruit, deep fruit, black cherries and currants, cinnamon spice and chalk, and even some caramel oak (but not a lot really). Oh, and there are some dried apricots too, but perhaps this is just the power of suggestion. The palate shows dry coffee beans, red cherry fruits, dry woody spices, and creamy oak. This really is some quality fruit here, and some quality oak too. An excellent cool climate wine, and it should get better with time.

I tried this at Wine Australia. This and the sangiovese (La Chiave) were pretty much the wines of the show (of the ones I tasted). The Castagna rose was outstanding too.

In Brisbane for work the past couple of days, I picked up a bottle of this from the excellent Festival Cellars and took it to dinner at Ecco. Great night, wine on song and wel-matched to the food. This built in the glass really well.
