Collector Wines Reserve Shiraz 2006 Tuesday, May 6 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Canberra and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
A colleague of mine (and I use the term loosely) told me I ought to get on to Collector Wines, so I wasted no time touching them up for a few bottles. I like a hot tip. Anyway, Canberra is looking more and more like one of THE regions in which to make great Shiraz in Australia and this is no exception. I love the tannins here. Welcome to Tannin country.
Strong dark colour with a delightful aromatics of black cherry, toffee, Brazil and hazelnuts, pepper and meat. On the palate medium to full bodied with rich smooth fruit of the blackberry and dark cherry persuasion, pepper, aniseed and a nutty toothsome fine grained dark chocolate texture. It has superb ripe tannins, a fluid glycerol mouth feel and no hint of warmth or intrusive alcohol. Fully ripe, but not sweet, closing with a long dry finish of nuts and chocolate. Outstanding.

Sounds extremely promising, I look forward to cracking open my bottle. The regular “Marked Tree” is also a lovely wine, and your description of this wine’s mouthfeel recalls it. I agree with you about Canberra Shiraz — it can be so distinctive and well proportioned.

I found the “Marked Tree” a bit too confectionery on the nose, was happier with the palate and mouth feel but far too much boiled lolly smell for my liking.
Looking forward to comparing this one.

THis is a wonderful wine and I agree with the comments regarding Canberra as a region for Shiraz. This wine doesnt have the elegance of the Marked Tree, with all its pepper and spice, however this reserve wine shows great fruit definition that will improve with time as the oak maturation softens.
