Tasting Notes and Australia and McLaren Vale and Wines of the Month and Top Value and Variety and Red and sangiovese et al

Sangiovese was first planted by Coriole in 1985 in the McLaren Vale, and this is the 19th vintage of the wine (I think). This grape is ideally suited to a warm maritime climate, which makes McLaren ideal, and Coriole is one of the best producers of this varietal in Australia.
The nose shows black cherries, plums and dark dusty spices: allspice, cinnamon, a sprinkle of nutmeg and cloves. There is also a touch of malt. The palate shows cherry fruits, with a drying dusty savouriness. It is medium weight, and has a satisfying gnawishness, with soft and ripe tannins. A very good example indeed, really quite lovely, with acid, tang, spice, ripe fruits and savoury dry spices all rolled into one. With time, some savoury stony chewiness emerged – I think this might also handle a bit of aging too. And finally, the price – it is really $17? A bargain at this price.

Yep, this is good gear. Best sangiovese I’ve had from Coriole and outdoes the recent Pizzini release for both class and value.

This sounds VERY nice. I’ll go and look for one now.

At 8am? I guess the sun is up over a yardarm somewhere?
My preference is for sparkling black shiraz and bacon sandwiches for breakfast, but sang should do just as well..

Oh yes. Not quite so literally. Maybe on the weekend.

I actually drunk this last night. It is a ripper. Value for money it is amazing.

I thought it looked better than their Brunello clone. Any one try that. I should have reviewed em b4 I left because I had ‘em side by side. Neil, do you agree?

Yep, I’ve tried the brunello clone only sangiovese, which came in a mixed pack of Coriole’s Italian gear. From memory, I liked it better than the 2004 normal sangiovese, but the 2005 beats it hands down.

Here is what I thought:
On the nose, it is quite brambly with dried herbs, anice, dark cherries and spicy oak coming through. The palate starts out quite full with dark fruits filled with lovely sweet fruit, cloves, bright acidity and mulberry. It finishes quite savoury with some nice and dry tannins. This should age well in the medium term.

At a recent dinner party with friends this wine, together with some Gippsland Pinot Noirs, was among the acknowledged “you beaut” wines. Coriole’s best Sangiovese yet by far!
