d’Arenberg ‘The Coppermine Road’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Tuesday, Jan 30 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and McLaren Vale and Variety and Red and cabernet et al
I am supposed to tasting 2004 Coonawarra but this has been tossing and turning and squeeking away at me from it’s little white foam box for a while now. I thought I heard it humming ‘Copperhead Road’ but that may just be a case of mistaken identity.
Lurid purple red. Aromas of cassis, dark cherry pie, licorice, boot polish and rosehip with coffee, cedar and vanilla from the oak. On the palate full bodied with lush cassis, raspberry and dried cherry fruit, flowers, coffee and more meaty toasty flavours. It has marvellous intense pure fruit. Fresh slightly pippy acidity, masses of fine grained powdery tannins and a long creamy finish. I can’t imagine a much better example of McLaren Vale cabernet. This is outstanding wine.

d’Arenberg seems to have had a ripper of a 2004 vintage for reds. A good McLaren Vale cabernet is a nice change to the Coonawarra and MR etc styles.
This is available for $45.95+freight, I’m off to get some shortly.

Yes I agree it does. 2004 Angelus is a beauty too. $46 is pretty smart..pretty much exactly LUC + GST….
I have the 2004 Ironstone Pressings, Galvo Garage, Sticks and Stones and the 2005 Laughing Magpie still to do.

Yeah, I’ve got a few Angelus 04 on the way too, I’m giving priority to 2004/2005 cabernets for a while to make up for a few vintages with pretty lean pickings for good Cabernets.

This is a nice wine.
The ‘04 Angelus is a tannic monster that will be a nicer wine in 20 years,

I recently got hold of a 1997 museum reserve coppermine road here in the UK, fantastic…we tasted it against a 2002 Coppermine… the difference was very clear.. Although the 2002 is very nicely balanced the reserve had a much richer, velvety medicinal quality..excellent wine..
The pick of the D’Arenburg wines for me is still Galvo Garage … Wonderful olive and chocolate notes, great balance..great with a good steak.. half the price of ironstone/coppermine too..
I have a case of Dead Arm 2001, but I intend to wait a good decade for taht one. A friend cracked open a bottle a few weeks ago..its still very heavy on the tannins..

Don’t bet all your dollars (or pounds) on the Dead Arm being a long ageing wine.
