d’Arenberg ‘The Twentyeight Road’ Mourvedre 2004 Friday, Apr 14 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and McLaren Vale and Langhorne Ck and Variety and Red and mourvedre et al
I remember having the first vintage (1995) of the 28 Road at Walter’s Wine Bar in Melbourne sometime in 1997. I was quite taken with the funny grape that started with the letter M. A year later we were staggering about at the Sea and Vines festival in McLaren Vale..and after an heroic walk from Coriole down to d’Arenberg we purchased a dozen of the 1996 vintage. All gone now. This 2004 is a re-introduction to the wine and it includes Langhorne Creek fruit which has moved the goalposts a bit. This wine is a much lighter, fresher wine than the brooding examples I have tried previously.
Aromas of red berry pie, herbs, pepper and spice with some floral notes. Low oak influence. Interesting smelling wine. On the palate a medium to full bodied wine with red fruit/cherry, ripe tomato, herb, spice and grassy flavours. Quite fresh. Tannins are firm and dry but not intrusive. It has a bit of a Spanish accent this young Australian…which is probably why I am having a little trouble understanding it at the moment.
