De Bortoli Gulf Station Shiraz Viognier 2006 Tuesday, Jan 29 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Yarra Valley and Wines of the Month and Top Value and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

Better than the 2005 I think.
Very fragrant offering a mix of sweet small berries, pepper, grilled meat and an aniseed perfume. On the palate medium bodied and a little more serious than first impressions suggest. It’s meaty, spicy and peppery with tangy red berries, stalks and a little dollop of vanilla oak. Dry and lightly grippy tannins coupled with sappy acid give this real vigour and energy in the mouth. Finishes dry and long with a redcurrant and dried herb aftertaste. How do they do it at the price?

These guys are definitely punching way above there weight at present. They are vying with Voyager for me as the best winery going around at present. The gulf station stuff is very impressive for the price

GW, you need the $ sign for this one. If it’s better than the ‘05, I may as well become a shareholder in Woolworths and get my 5% discount on the truckload I am going to get at Dan’s.

The $ sign gets done at the end of each month for Wines of the Month. i.e. I do January early Feb. The smart money is on this getting the golden dollar..

GW, could the window for drinking this be a little wider? I thought the ‘05 would develop a little over the medium term.

Probably but I’d be drinking it young.

From looking at wine-searcher.com it appears it is actually about $14.99 at most places so that would be a steal.

Yes. It is..everywhere apart from Vintage Cellars where it is about $56.95….

Am I missing something here? I grabbed a bottle a couple of weeks ago after experiencing the Estate Shiraz Viogner. (while I drank that far too young it was delicious).
Tried this and well, um, what can I say. I thought that it was OK, fruit seemed slightly green and the acidity was just well, discombobulated. I could put it down to bottle variation and/or fault, but I was expecting much more from this…

Certainly a light fresh style. I’ll be (mildly) interested to hear what other people think as it trickles out of the shops.

Towards the end of this bottle I found the oak and meatiness rising above the intial simple cherry & berry.

hmmm, not really taken with this one-a little “featureless” for me- light fresh style for sure.

Oh. Hmmmm not proving too popular then this one…

I just didn’t think that it was well integrated, but like I said, it was a week after drinking the most delicious Estate SV… I’ll try again and see if my opinion changes at all.

Bear in mind that I am usually unenthused by shiraz, especially lighter bodied. Though i do like the Torbreck woodcutter, which is probably in a similar style.
