De Iuliis Charlie Shiraz 2006 Monday, Oct 29 2007
Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Wines of the Month and Tip Top Tipple and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

This is the first of three 2006 red releases from De Iuliis and is their ‘traditional’ Hunter shiraz offering. The fruit for this vintage is sourced from the prostigious Stevens vineyard.
Strong red purple colour. Aromas of crushed berries, spice and violets with a dusting of vanilla and chocolate and only slightly more Hunter Earth than you would scrape off a Blundstone after a gentle walk round the vineyard. This is fragrant and spotlessly clean. On the palate medium bodied with fresh berry fruit, spice, violet and a little earth and chocolate. It has light powdery tannins offering a lovely lightly chalky texture and has impeccable line through the palate. Finishes long and clean with bright fruit with a little drop of vanilla to close. It’s a beauty.

Better fruit, cleaner. Better. There is a link to the note on the 2005 above.

Right on. Took one mouthful and said, ‘Great Wine!’
Disclaimer: I try very hard to sell this great wine in Melbourne. There is still, unfortunately, a great bias against great wine from The Hunter.

Hi Vangelis,
Hopefully Dieter is too busy tring to sell my wine to reply, whilst i am just kicking back waiting for grapes to ripen!!! I don’t think any retailers in Melbourne stock the ‘06 Charlie, Celebrations in Calton & Port Melbourne stock the Show Reserve shiraz.
Also Nicks in Doncaster and Randalls in Geelong can order it in for you.
Cheers

I joined the De Iuliis wine club late last year
and picked up a bottle of this along the way. They appear to make 3 shiraz. All exceptional wines in my opinion - deep berry fruit with a dash of chocolate, hunter earth and a whisper of fine French oak. Actually, Mike, I was going to contact you guys at some stage to see whether you could do 2 of each ‘06 shiraz at the next 6 month delivery. Also bought a doz of the ‘05 chardonnay at the cellar door, which I also found to be classic Hunter Chardonnay with brilliant oak handling and great with a summer chicken salad or seafood.

I have the other 2006 shiraz on the bench. Going to do a bit of a 2006 Hunterva-fest any tick with DeI Reserve, DeI Limited, Brokenwood, Tulloch Private Bin, Meerea Hell Hole, Meerea Alex Munro, Krinklewood etc etc.
