Domaine François Raveneau Chablis “Montée de Tonnerre” 1er cru 2004 Tuesday, Oct 31 2006
Tasting Notes and France and Burgundy and Variety and White and chardonnay

I didn’t buy any 2004 Raveneaus, but luckily I had a friend drop over on the weekend with a bottle in hand. We all need friends like this. A kind of New World nose: preserved lemons and a bit of butterscotch, green apple skins and a lick of wet stone; quite a fruity nose. In contrast, the palate showed a lot less fruit and a more structure, with fine lemons and grapefruits, minerals, and a latent power that was impressive. It had quite a full and rounded mouthfeel but was at the same time as taut as a drum. A wine with oodles of class – a terrific effort.

There is a Japanese word (I forget the word) that literally means ‘trying out a new sword on a chance passerby’.I always liked that idea.

If you didn’t buy 2004 your friend picked the right premier to dual with. 2005 Montée de Tonnerre is even better apparently. I’m yet to try. I always think Rav’s Montée de Tonnerre is his best 1er, with rich complexity and a matching tight focus close to Grand Cru…not quite the class. I tasted a 99 the other week and it burst out of the glass with complex grapefruit and stone aromatics with vibrant, better balanced fruit on the palate. It was bliss
