Tasting Notes and Australia and Mornington and Variety and Red and other reds
There is not much Australian gamay about. I can only remember trying Sorrenberg. Who else makes one I wonder? Anyway, after tasting this I think there should be more of it. A versatile wine and one that suits our climate. It can be served cool in summer or warmer in the cooler months.
Aromas of cherry, summer berry, sweet almond, spice and a nice meaty overtone. On the palate it is light to medium bodied with spicy flavours of cherry and summer berries. Fine dry tannins and a gamey dry strawberry finish. I am very taken with this wine. Interesting flavours and high drinkablilty.

Phillip Jones makes two under the Bass Phillip label - a “Primeur” version, which is released about 14 months after vintage, and the Estate version, which spends another 10 or so months in those round roly things that smell like dried tree bits.

The most prolific and well known is ppppfffeifers at Wahgunyah.
There is a McLaren Vale one that is made into a Rose.
Roundstone in the Yarra Valley make a bang on “Villages” style.
Len Evans vineyard has a little and there are a coupla others.

David,
The St Charles family in Beaujolais who I visited( close friends of Len Evans)were telling me that when they visited the Hunter they suggested to Len that his Gamay vines may not really be Gamay after all, an opinion that was vociferously opposed!

Cribbing from www.vinodiversity.com it seems there are more Australian gamay makers than I realised:
“Wineries using this variety in Australia include: Bass Phillip, Brave Goose Winery, Cofield Wines, Darling Estate, Elan Vineyard, Eldridge Estate, Evans Family Wines, Fernbrook Estate, Gowrie Mountain Estate, Grandview Vineyard, Happs, John Gehrig Wines, Lawson Hill, Marybrook Vineyards & Winery, Mount Burrumboot Estate, Pennyweight Winery, Pfeiffer Wines, Roundstone Winery, Scarpatoni Estate, Sorrenberg, Wilmot Hills Vineyard”
The Pennyweight is the only one I can recall trying, and liked it, though bought other things from them.

Scarpentoni in Mc Laren Vale South Australia has made some excellent Gamay. They tell me that not every year is suited to make a Gamay on its own.
When it is not ideal, they blend it with other reds. This Gamay lasted comfortably for 5 years with good cellaring.
If you like a Beaujolais wine, the Scarpantoni was very close to that.

I think Mitolo do a good Gamay too from memory.
