Felton Road Pinot Noir 2007 Tuesday, Jun 17 2008
Tasting Notes and New Zealand and Central Otago and Variety and Red and pinot noir
The 2007 season in Central Otago was essentially excellent. Some producers reported a bit of shrivel but generally intense flavours and a lot of mid palate richness will be the go. Felton Road are great believers in biodynamic principles especially those of Steiner and feel that this vintage demonstrates its worth. I gather the wine was only bottled three or four weeks ago and for this reason I suggest waiting a little while at which stage I feel a better picture will emerge. The nose has loads of ripe red cherry and char with a hint of sour Morello style cherry. The palate shows sweet fruit that is very big across the mid palate, cherry flavours, a bit of dried herbs and a lovely silky texture. The mid palate grunt doesn’t translate through to the end at this stage and hopefully will fill out over the next few months. The oak is more subtle on the palate than indicated by the nose.

Hi David,
It must have been bottled a little longer than that as its been in shops since beginning of May.

You are right, I had the tasting note written 3 weeks ago but didn’t have a bottle image to match until Zhan kindly supplied me with one last night. So about six weeks ago would be more accurate.

No worries David, label not quite so yeller in real life tho!
I enjoyed this, it was still zippy and almost spritzy on the tongue, perhaps that freshness in the bottling is coming through. Loved the rich full mid palate as you say, and the funk in the nose is there already — which I adore and chase after pinots for, and which is so hard to get in the Aus pinots I drink in the $30-$50 price range. Had it with some Sth Australian goats cheese last night and it stood up, phew.

The $30-$50 pinot brackets seems to be a really tough bracket. Sub $30 expectations are lower and there are enough around satisfying these (Hoddles, 9th Island, DeBortoli, Yering etc.) but once you get upwards from there it seems to be a tougher game.

PS. Agree that label does look remarkably yellow in the pic.

I like to keep the screws on
It’s more a matter of budget than anything else.
I’m just drinking the Felton Rd 07 chardonnay now and it is WEIRD. Kind of dull and boring really. and really short on the palate.
Better pic David.
