Jacobs Creek Steingarten Riesling 2005 Saturday, Oct 20 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Eden Valley and Variety and White and riesling
Did they release a 2004 Steingarten or was that vintage not up to scratch I wonder?
Aromas of green apple, lime and a touch of toast and honey leading on to a sweet juicy fruited palate with apple and lime and a little bit of toasty development. Fairly soft and round but as the wine gets more air it tightens up and becomes progressively drier and more flinty. Good length of flavour with a dry lemon/lime finish. Excellent, for sure, but not quite the usual wonderful Steingarten experience for me.

I still don’t really understand why they hold back the Steingraten and release it at the ridiculous age of 2 yrs old? (And asked John Vickery why back in early 2003 after trying the superb 2002 vintage).
Wouldnt they be better off releasing it at say 5 yrs old (Like the contours) for a more mature Riesling experience or immediately so we can appreciate the minerality? I can attest to the drinkability as a 9 month old wine…

That is an interesting point AndrewG makes about the hold back age, I imagine it is probably as long as the marketing people let them get away with or something along those lines, but personally I either drink good riesling quite young or hold on to it for at least 5 years, the two year mark does seem a bit redundant…

Had this recently. Raised it’s big boofy Riesling head and took no prisoners on the day. Terrific wine, you can have your Grossets if this wine continues to rage on.
