Tasting Notes and Australia and Clare Valley and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
I don’t get round to drinking (or tasting) much Clare Valley red one way or another. Not sure why.
Jumps out of the glass with cassis, blackberry, raspberry, liquorice allsorts, mint and some spicy toasty oak. Beautiful smelling wine. On the palate full bodied and intense with flavours of raspberry coulis, cassis, blackberry, mint and licorice. Really good vibrant fruit with some leather/bitter chocolate characters adding interest and spicy toasty vanilla oak in support. It has fine grained tannin, a nice fresh mouthfeel and some warmth from alcohol that’s a bit intrusive but not over-bearing. Finishes with spice and liquorice flavours. Packs a magnum of flavour into 750ml without looking clumsy.

a big score Gary for a wine built for the long haul. Is 93 points based on current or potential? I ask becuase I have half a dozen of the 2003 in the cellar. I bought an extra to try and it seemed too young (but with huge undeveloped flavour) about a year and half ago. I think it is time to retaste.

Both..sort of..but mainly potential here as indicated by the best guess of later drinking window. I use a + if I think it may have a bit of X-Factor and therefore room for improvement with bottle age but am not entirely sure.

thank you for the prompt reply Gary. I am a novice and bought the 2003 on spec based on local importer’s recommendation. Scarcity seemed to be part of his recommendation. Next time you are in Auckland I will “knock the top off one”. Will look out for the 04.

05 out July - it’s a step up on this with magnificent texture.
