La Chapelle de Saint-Dominique Vin de Pays de l'Herault 2003

From the noblest vineyards of the Languedoc in the village of Aniane, midway between Montpelier and Beziers. A blend of 60% Syrah, 26% Carignan, 6% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Mourvedre.

Well I spotted this Vin de Pays at Langtons recently with a modest price estimate of $6-$8. So I had a punt at the bottom of the range and won 4 bottles. A rich red in colour. A ripe nose, and perhaps a little baked, with cherries, cola, cordial, a touch of garrigue and spice. The palate shows red fruits and old black pepper, but to be honest showed some abrasion. It has reasonable length, but lacks the depth of fruit to make it a convincing and appealing wine. Drink over the short term with some diverting conversation.
