Leo Buring Clare Valley Riesling 2003 Tuesday, Jan 8 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Clare Valley and Variety and White and riesling

I have listed this as a winery sample even though I have no record of having received it as such; it is just that I don’t tend to buy Rieslings for some reason or other. A lovely balanced nose, with lemon/lime aromas, lemony straw and a touch of toasty development. The palate is quite fresh but also showing some complexity, preserved lemons, juicy fruits but with a mineral edge, and a bit of apple. The sweet fruits sweep through the palate providing a refreshing and invigorating drink, super stuff, I am impressed, a most excellent wine.

The 03 Leonay is sensational. Toss up with Drumborg as to riesling of the 03 vintage.

Nice to hear it’s aging well - the 03 vintage seems to have been “lost” after the excellent 2002.
James, totally agree on the 03 Leonay - was great young (not tried since release). My memory of the 03 Drumborg was that it was almost painful with it’s acid …. hopefully it’ll come around (i think i’ve got 2 of each in the cellar).
ps the “other vintages” seems to link to the Eden rather than Clare Valley Burings.

Just before Christmas, the big beer company released some aged Leo Buring Rieslings. I grabbed some stock of ‘99 Clare and ‘97 Eden Valley and both are looking very good (though unfortunately under cork and I have seen a bit of ‘wet cork’ influence on one bottle). These sell for around $30 singly which isn’t bad for a quality white with this amount of age!!!

The ‘99 Clare riesling is just excellent, and a sensational price. Excitement in a bottle.

Ditto the ‘99 Clare - it’s an outstanding expression of its style.
