Tasting Notes and Australia and Canberra and Variety and Red and pinot noir
Some very good wines coming out of the Canberra region these days..and I reckon they have a spot for nearly every variety. Versatile.
Clear garnet colour with red fruit, forest floor, a saucy spicy aspect, a slight sappiness and a good deal of smokiness. On the palate only just medium bodied with flavours of red fruits (some a little baked and sweet), lots of spice and a touch of smoke. It has light dry tannins and a good core of acidity but looks a little blurry round the edges. Decent length. It’s clearly varietal, drinks really well and offers an interesting regional diversion for local Pinot fanciers.

My review from auswine a while ago (initial price $22):
“Lerida Estate Pinot Noir 2006, Canberra, 13.5%, screwcap.
- This did well in the Canberra Wine Show (picking up a gold, from memory), so I bought several to have a look with food. This is Australian pinot for acid lovers. The nose shows mid-weight fruit, including some vanilla, there is good flavour ripeness through the palate. Tannins are unobtrusive, but it is acid that carries the show, taking this well into the (fruit) sweet and sour territory…”

I liked it, but other people I was with did not. I was in a real mood for acid both times (two bottles) I’ve had this with food. I like good acid in pinot noir, but it’s a style that won’t suit all Australian pinot noir drinkers. I’ll take another bottle out to dumplings tonight and see how it’s travelling.

Just to show I’m open to experimentation, I had a glass of this with the confit duck at Grazing (Gundaroo) last night. It went well enough with the food, but I didn’t think the acid was particularly high and it was more of an innocuous and inoffensive accompaniment rather than an interesting drink.

RB, the bottle last month taken to dumplings at Hawker had integrated a lot more than earlier bottles - acid now less prominent. Still not completely conviced about Lake George for pinot, better for chardonnay I reckon, or tempranillo.

Of the wines I have tasted, the chardonnay has been the best of the Lerida wines so far gor me too. I found the 06 Shiraz Viognier pretty heavy going.
