Longhop Shiraz 2006 Tuesday, Jun 12 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Adelaide Plains and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Another charismatic wine, packed with flavour and value, from the irrepressable Domenic Torzi.
A rich festive smelling wine offering up cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and a bit of earth and spice. On the palate full bodied with intense flavours of plum and cherry liqueur, chocolate, spice and bitter herbs. There are plenty of fine grained tannins lurking beneath the fruit yet it feels soft and very approachable. A little sting from alcohol detracts but only very slightly. Good length of flavour. Fantastic value.

Yeah, good value. I ordered a 3pk, drank 2 within a couple of weeks. Have a glass left in the third bottle that I’ll have shortly with a hearty beef stew. Only opened the 3rd bottle after I ordered another 3pk - maybe I should’ve got a case
)).
I think there are some reductive characters when first opened or it’s just that it takes a short while to open up, whatever, after a bit or air time it blossoms into a juiceiness that is big but still has some restraint. There’s enough complexity to keep the wine interesting. I don’t think it’s a fruity bruiser in the same mould as Taylors Shiraz 05 (which I also like).

Not a whisper of reduction in my sample bottle.
Hearty wine with a hearty stew. Just the ticket.

Tucking into one now, absolutely nowght wrong with this. Good with spag bol too. Should be even better with another six months or so in bottle, but I doubt whether the case will last that long. psst..$13/bott by the case deliverd from CD!

Yep, $13/btl for a dozen, freight free too, as is the 3pk which I think is an innovative idea. Excellent value. But I’m trying to slow the rate of increase of the level of red ink on the plastic fantastic and have already splurged on a 6/6 case of Mike Press cab 05 and shiraz 06.
Free freight can mean from $0.75 to $1.30+/btl difference to me in my location so it’s always a consideration. Reliably quick delivery is also important to me, living in tropics.

Tasting the 07 tonight, I think it’s better than the 06 that I very much enjoyed. The 07 is less plummy with black fruits, licorice and more savoury than the 06. It has nice ripe, dusty, drying tannins that carry through the good-length finish. I couldn’t help but note the almost black/purple colour of the first pour. Oak plays a background support role, the whole berry ferment seems to me to provide most of the tannin. There’s no noticeable warmth from the 14.5% alc. Another great bargain wine from Longhop, it’ll be an interesting comparsion to Rory’s The Story Grampians 06 when it arrives.

You have it on one Daz. My thoughts exactly.

Looking forward to your TN and rating GW. For me, highly recommended/91pts.
