Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Variety and Red and other reds
They’re growing all sorts of interesting things up in the Hunter these days - Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Tannat and Barbera. I opened this along with a few other ‘alternative varieties’ from the same vintage and must say I enjoyed the change of pace. This came into its own when I had a glass with food (my famous Rigatoni Puttanesca in case you were wondering) at which stage I could have easily added a point or two to the score.
It smells of things like liquorice, berries, earth, game and spice - all good and interesting. Medium bodied with dried herbs, berries, orange peel and spice flavours. It has some attractive bitterness, chunky tannins and the acidity is a bit edgy but it drinks well and certainly does very well with food. Has character. I like it.

It was interesting to see this wine lined up with the 05 & 07. Not quite the lifted aromatics of the vintages either side, but more mid palate weight as to be expected of the vintage.
We spent 2 days this week with Andrew (Margan) & John Duval predominantly looking at barrel selection & blending of the 07 reds. With all of the less than favourable talk of the 08 red vintage in the Hunter it was very encouraging. The 07 Barbera looks likely to be included in the White Label range

07 will be the vintage of the century for reds!
