Meerea Park Shiraz Viognier 2005 Sunday, Nov 5 2006
Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Wines of the Month and Top Value and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

The 2005 vintage for Hunter Valley shiraz is looking as good as any I can remember and this is most certainly the best Meerea Park Shiraz Viognier to date. It is also the first release to be co-fermented with the viognier (5 percent) and what a difference it makes. Aged in French oak (10% new) for 16 months.
Aromas of dark fruit, earth, licorice, flowers and light cedar oak. On the palate perfectly ripe dark berry fruit (think blue and black), earth and licorice bullets with just a hint of apricot and flowers floating gently beneath the surface. Silky, almost slippery, fine grained tannins. Beautiful texture. Medium to full bodied. Long earthy blueberried finish. Killer value. Shiraz at under $20 simply does not get better than this.

It all boils down to belief.
HV terroir is good enough to stand on it’s own, always has been, it just needs to believe. It always has been, now no longer the bridesmaid, but the bride!
(BV, Grampians, YV etc terroir is good too, it’s just different, but it’s all good!)

WOW! Just tucking into this wine and it truely is the best Shiraz Viognier they have produced. If this is an indication of what’s to come from Meerea Park & the 2005 vintage, look out.

It is good eh Stewart (you flogger). Easily the best yet although I have the 2003 93 points two or so years ago…and this is better. I am meaner these days (I think).

My local Dan Murphy had cases of this today under a sign quoting GW’s review. Hitting the big time?
