Meerea Park Shiraz Viognier 2006 Wednesday, Oct 10 2007
Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
I’d love to see this wine without the viognier but the boys at Meerea Park tell me that is what ‘The Aunts’ is for…..but I’d still like to see them make a low oak (this has 10% new) fruit driven Hunter style - sans viognier.
Strong colour. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, earth, chocolate and light vanilla oak. There is a bit of floral perfume from the viognier but nothing distracting. It’s medium bodied with earthy blackberry and dark cherry fruit and has quite strong grainy tannins rippling through the palate. Minimal oak influence with clean slightly crunchy acidity and good length of flavour. Showed no signs of tiring after being open for a couple of days. Yet another vintage delivering outstanding value and great drinking.

Can I ask a stupid question ? Where you say, “open for a couple of days” or “given some time to air” etc… what are we talking about ? Leaving the wine in an open bottle ? a sealed decanter ?
I know certain wines need to breath a little to open up, but I don’t think I’ve ever let one sit for a few days… At what point does it start to oxidise and go bad ?

Well this is not how I drink wines but more how I taste them. I might have a little taste and then see how it looks a day later if I am curious or being thorough or the wine is a brute or a cellaring style etc. Depends on the wine.
Usually I try and give the bottle away as soon as I can otherwise if they are hanging about then I might re-taste before they go down the sink. When I talk about ‘over a couple of days’ it is always just an opened bottle and often stored in the fridge (to slow oxidation) when the weather is warmer.
To answer the second part of the question then it depends on the wine. Some tire by the next day. Stuff like Grange goes for days.
