Meerea Park Viognier 2007 Wednesday, Mar 26 2008
Tasting Notes and Hunter Valley and Australia and Variety and White and viognier et al
I don’t much like Viognier, but if I do drink it then I want it to taste like Viognier….and not some washed out, high acid, flavourless variant. So here we have a wine that is fully varietal, modestly priced and gasp…it’s from the Hunter Valley.
Brash and obvious with juicy stonefruit, tropical fruits, quince, vanilla and roasted nuts. On the palate medium to full bodied with good rich flavours of slightly candied stone and tropical fruit, spice and supporting vanilla oak. It has a lightly slippery glycerol mouthfeel with balanced acidity and a dry spicy finish of good length. Good wine. Smart price.

I was quite a determined non drinker of viognier until I was lucky enough to try a Condrieu from the northern Rhone. ‘Brash’ and ‘obvious’ would be two words NOT to describe the wine! It certainly changed my opinion of the grape …
I think a comparative tasting of Australian (or new world, or even elsewhere in France) viogniers against those of the Rhone would be extremely interesting & instructive.

Yes. I have had Yves Cuilleron Condrieu la Petite Cote, Vernay etc. They taste like Viognier too.

PS. I am attributing the brash and obvious specifically to this wine, not to Viognier in general.

Does it still look the same + or -1 ? I can’t remember and update the image. Most of them are stock images. i.e. I don’t take them.

I have seen the 2007, but I can’t remember myself. I think the cap colour changed on the Shiraz from 05 to 06. When I get some I’ll let you know.
