Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Monday, Jun 12 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Margaret River and Variety and Red and cabernet et al
Cabernet is King as we all know..and king of Australian cabernet sauvignon is probably Moss Wood. We bought a dozen of these about 2 years ago..and I like to check up on these things. The screwcap closure is working very well here. The wine is developing as I would expect a cork closed bottle but (obviously) showing no taint and no reduction whatsoever.
Beautiful smelling cabernet with aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, beef stock, cedar oak and with time some licorice characters emerging. On the palate the fruit is deep and rich but not fruity or overly chocolaty (for a wine of this alcohol) - just concentrated and beautifully ripe with mulberry/blackcurrant and more earthy leafy flavours. Lots of fine grained ripe tannin and good freshness with a fairly tannic blackcurranty finish. This wine has settled down very well over the last two years and is looking much more savoury with earthy beefy flavours coming to the fore. Super wine.

You are a fool. It is not hot at all. In fact I thought of you as I tasted this - “Rum and raison my arse..Adam is a fool” is what I thought. This is positively Bordeaux like…

GW … and how does it compare to the 95MW? Are you able to compare or will I need to await your next trip west to find out?

I tried this a few years ago - it is a ripper of a wine. In no way hot.
Cheers,

You are all wrong. Your palates are tainted with the diesel you are used to drinking…

Gary,
I look forward to putting this double blind next to a recent Pichon Lalande one day soon to see how it fares.
Sometime, someplace…you will see the light.

I have only had the 95 a couple of times…mmmm maybe that is more like the 99? I think it will be better than the ‘95. Just a hunch..
Put it next to the 2003 Pichon…I’ll put me $$ down.

I think lots of MR cabernets are getting too hot. Where are the 13.0% -> 13.5% abv wines?

Latour, Margaux, Pichon, leoville Barton, Mosswood all contain Cabernet. Waste of palate space.

Is there no peace even in the australian valley? Calm your souls with a Henrys Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 made by wine-wizzard Marquis and wife.
