Mount Langi Ghiran “Langi” Shiraz 2004 Monday, Jun 11 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Grampians and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Very nice to see yet another Australian benchmark red closed with a screwcap, and let’s face it, the screwcap argument is all but done and dusted (locally at least) so I won’t harp on any longer.
Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, aniseed, lots of spice, just a little pepper and some cedary slightly coconutty oak. A veritable potpourri of smells leap out of the glass. On the palate medium to full bodied with black and red berry fruit, spice, pepper and vanilla oak. It has plenty of firm sandy tannins and lively acidity along with a little warmth from alcohol but nothing out of balance. Finishes long, dry and spicy with a rasp of tannin to close. It’s big and ripe but not overdone. A very convincing example of MLG.

I think the alcohol level as stated on the label is 15% not 14% and I reckon it is higher than that stated - it is quite hot.

Opps. It is 15%. It’s not hot if you drink it cool man.

I found it slippery and maybe a little warm but not hot.

I’m with GW on this wine. Only a tiny hint of warmth, but massively enjoyable.

Each to their own. This vintage is universally applauded I do believe. Not had the Summerfield so can’t comment.

Gary
Have you got an 05 on the tasting bench??

No I don’t. They did not send it this year. Rathbones are funny. Xanadu lots recently, Yering Station once but seemingly no more, Parker every now and then, Langi lots but not currently..or so it would seem. They don’t seem to have a cohesive media thingo going on. It’s apparently awesome from other reviews I have read. I’d suggest you can buy with confidence.

G, you are not showing any other vintages, any thoughts however on either 2003 or 2000?
April 28th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
There are notes on the site for 2003 and 1999. I just don’t have the ‘other vintages’ feature on some of the older reviews. The 2000 I liked when tasted on release - not sure how it is coming along now. The 2003 was good but a bit too hot and porty for my tastes. I can understand why some liked it though.

The 2005 is awesome, but not much/any better than the 2004 and you can still get the 2004 $10pb cheaper than the 2005.
Last 2000 I tried a couple of months ago wasn’t all that great, but could just be vagaries of cork, could have low-level brett too.
