Tasting Notes and USA and Variety and Red and pinot noir
This wine is actually from fruit grown on the Sonoma Coast of California which is a fairly obscure area that essentially covers coastal areas on either side of San Francisco. It tends to be the coolest of the Californian Pinot AVA’s (regions). We had it after a rather disappointing wine reviewed a week ago. This was great! It commences with a very enticing nose of cherry and oaky spice. On the palate it had lovely cherry with a bit of cinamon spice and a velvet texture that lasted for quite some time. I think I spotted a little plum and maybe a bit of a cola flavour, probably from high quality oak. Almost creamy with a cherry finish.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is actually entirely north of San Francisco, for whatever it’s worth…

Thankyou, but the point is that its a tricky one! A quick view of the site you point to makes that quite clear. As the AVA was explained to me, vineyards within it are cooler than most other Ca AVAs, often due to the morning fogs that keep overnight temps low and temperature swings high. Central Coast AVAs and some Russian River get the same cooling but the Sonoma Coast AVA reflects an overall cooler heat summation (generally). The main problem with Ca wines is the lack of availabilty in Australia when I feel the best are worth a look at.

In another example of Winorama being renowned, the Pinotfile has just come out with a profile on Sonoma Coast complete with maps etc. See more at www.princeofpinot.com
In summary they say: The Sonoma Coast AVA (American Vineyard Appellation) is the largest of the 13 AVAs in Sonoma County at 750 square miles. This cumbersome AVA was formed in 1987 primarily to allow certain wineries to include all of their scattered major vineyards within one boundary so they could use the “estate bottled” designation
on their wine labels. The Sonoma Coast AVA is defined by its coolness, with no more than 2,800 degree days of heat during the growing season.
