Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2004 Saturday, Mar 3 2007
Tasting Notes and Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale and Langhorne Ck and Padthaway and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
Kalimna has always been a favourite of mine. I even persist in calling it Kalimna (R) which is now apparently a trademark! Now that it comes with a stylish embossed screwcap the urge to buy and cellar is even stronger. That being said the last vintage I stashed away was the 1998…but this is certainly a contender..although the outstanding 407 may consume the Penfolds budget for this year. That being said (again), I have not tasted the 389 as yet….that is a job for tomorrow.
Aromas of blackberry, raspberry, plum, chocolate, meat and light pencilly vanilla oak. Fairly charry on opening. On the palate rich and slightly cakey with blackberry, plum, chocolate and meaty spicy vanilla oak. No shortage of flavour. It feels soft and supple but the luxurious quality of the fruit masks plenty of ripe dry chewy tannins. Finishes with chocolate and plum flavours. An very good but perhaps not great Kalimna.

I found the Bin 28 very approachable already, much like the Bin 407. I am very keen on both of them and will probably drink some this year and maybe cellar some as well??
When you taste the Bin 389, pls give it some air time. I found it tight and after reading other opinions, maybe it needs a few hours to open up.

Dear Gary Walsh,
To me the Bin 28 is more of a gutsy wine than the Bin 128. At the same price range, most of my friends prefer the Bin 128 because it is more subtle. I noticed that there is a phenomenon which there are less past good vintages of Bin 128 available than Bin 28 in the liquor stores. Do you think that the Bin 128 is more popular wine than Bin 28? =.=a

No. I think they probably make less of it.

$17.79 this week @ 1st Choice or $16.90 in any mixed dozen, seems like a good price as I’ve been seen it for $22+ lately.

I concur Eddy, good price and although I’ve not looked around, I doubt it’d be found cheaper. Picked up a bottle this afternoon to try it - seems to be one of Penfold’s preferred vfm wines among the commentators. This may be the 2nd Bin 28 I’ve tried? Gary’s TN didn’t mention it has a bit of lively acid supporting the ripe, chewy but soft tannins on the back palate/finish. The $18/$17 price point is probably appropriate compared to it’s competition.
I’ll work a deal for a mixed case of (discontinued line) Wilson Polish River Riesling and Bin 28 04 at my local 1st Choice barn with one of the staff I’ve known since the Hedley days.
