Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2005 Wednesday, Mar 5 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale and Langhorne Ck and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

Again, the picture shows a screwcap but my bottle was sealed under cork. A blend of fruit from the McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek. A nose of red plums and cloves, some pepper with chocolate and mint, but not in a mint slice kind of way. A strange combination of aromas but it was nuanced and very appealing. The palate showed red plums and quite a bit of red liquorice, dry spices and a dry finish. The length is very good, and the wine displays a nice richness but also had some lightness. This was drinking well on the first night (perhaps because it had a cork and not a screwcap) and rock solid on the next night - I reckon it should take some age.

Sounds better than the wine I had from 3 different tastings. Will certainly retaste it too
but the 2005 was the first which I did not buy
straight away.simply missing the weight and generous flavour profile it usually got.
Cheers

How were the bottles you tasted sealed?

I think you’ve nailed it with the emphasis on “red” Lincoln, and this precisely where I think style has changed (witness Jules’ comments on another thread, regarding Bin 389). For me, Bin 28 was once all about “purple” (and not just the colour of the wine). In fact, I opened a ‘98 Bin 28 about two months ago and it was certainly reasonably dense and, wait for it, purple plums, not red ones. And there was much more newer oak showing. (I tasted under screwcap BTW).

Interesting. I am only an occasional consumer of Bin 28, drinking 6 bottles in the past 8 years, so didn’t notice the style change.

The oak treatment has definitely changed - much more cedary rather than vanillin for mine from, I think, 2001 onwards - though I also don’t drink it with sufficient regularity to proclaim any great expertise! I guess the fruit issues can be quite subjective.

Wow, what a difference a cork can make.

Does anyone in the know know how to tell from the label on the carton, or any other method, whether the bottles therein are screwcap or cork?
Came close to breaking at least one finger slipping it carefully so as to avoid damaging the carton between the flaps and checking the seal.
I’m hoping it’s not a really obvious method, so I don’t feel like a complete idiot

Ask a store assistant?

The obvious solution, but in Dan’s? There is ONE guy at the closest store who really knows his stuff, and for some reason he doesn’t work the whole day there
I think someone before me DID ask a store assistant. That would explain the packing tape on some of the cartons.

Just open one of the flaps at the end to check. No one will mind, and if they do, shop somewhere else. They can always tape them up again. Serves them right for not knowing.

Thanks Jules. Nice to know it’s OK. My knuckles are thankful.

I take when commenting about screwcap vs Cork that you have tried a screwcap version as well? And was this more closed?
cheers

No I haven’t tried the s/c version - I was just hypothesising out loud…

The S/C version tastes and smells pretty much exactly as your note reads. Chocolate, mint, darker fruits and plum (pudding). Nice enough, warmish, but perhaps a bit inert. I’ll probably write it up later but about 90 for me.
