Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Sunday, Feb 26 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and McLaren Vale and Coonawarra and Langhorne Ck and Variety and Red and cabernet et al

Just working my way through the new Penfolds bin releases at the moment. They should all be reviewed by the end of the week.
Aromas of red cherry/plum, blackcurrant, herb and tobacco and cedar/vanilla oak. Medium bodied palate with flavours of red fruits and blackcurrant. Strong tannins that are a touch hard. Some warmth. Dry tannic finish. At the moment the wine comes across as being very young and a little bit raw. Left overnight the wine improved and showed more complexity. A good wine no doubt, and one that will improve in the cellar, but $35 is pushing the envelope a bit in todays market perhaps?

I agree with the comments on the pricing, and so do my ex-Penfolds buying friends. The 389 was retailing at $39 at Dan’s on the weekend - good wine but too old fashioned to sell at over $30 in my opinion. Maybe it will be discounted if it doesn’t sell. I’m sure the 407 will be discounted in time - how many will pay over $30 for it ??!! Too much choice nowadays too get away with it.

I also agree with the pricing comments. The accountants at Penfolds seem more concerned with market positioning and price points than with providing good wine at a realistic price. They miss the market with 389 and 407 being too expensive for what is in the bottle. 407, in particular seems to be “dumbed down” and very commercial in style now and not now even worth its old street price of $20
