Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 1997 Monday, Apr 17 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Barossa Valley and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

Having had a remarkably youthful 1991 St Henri recently I was very interested to try another one, this time from a relatively poor vintage. Again, the wine showed sweet raspberry fruits untrammelled by oak, with some secondary leather and wood spice. The palate is still quite rich and primary, sweet fruits, perhaps a bit of char and bark, warm spices and sweet earth. A welcoming and supple wine, perhaps lacking some refinement, and more time isn’t going to help it. Drink now and don’t decant it as it faded with 3 hours in the glass and appeared a bit stale and acidic.

This wine is what I would call a very good dinner wine. Excellent with roast meats.

Don’t decent it? I’m sure it’s better than that

Right on the money Lincoln, had this about 3 years ago and though it extremely approachable and enjoyable, revisted last year and thought it was on the slide. Time is not its friend.
