Petaluma Chardonnay 2006 Tuesday, Apr 29 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Adelaide Hills and Variety and White and chardonnay
Hand picked fruit, 60% new oak from Diggle and Jiggle and 90% malo-lactic fermentation are the key points in the extensive technical bits that Petaluma always seem to provide…just in case you were wondering.
It presents as a more subdued and genteel wine with white peach, nectarine, grilled nuts and spicy smoky oak. On the palate medium bodied with an attractive flinty mineral texture offset by more creamy ‘banana split’ characters. It has fine acidity and feels beautifully balanced, controlled and composed throughout. It’s smooth and polished with no sharp edges or vulgar fruitiness and closes with a long dry flint edged finish. A wine of considerable charm and sophistication.

Had a friend tell me how much she loved this chardy at a wedding yesterday. She also asked me if there was a chardonnay at a lower price point but with similar characteristics. Have only ever had one bottle so couldn’t help her at the time. Was wondering whether Gary or anyone else out there could help?

Thanks Rawshack. Have tried the Toolangi a couple of years ago, and from what I remember, it fits the bill (and I liked it too!). And yeah DB, the wedding must have cost a fortune even though it was a small gathering, but one has to be polite and drink what is offered
. I paid for my sins dutifully with a rather bad hangover this morning due to good wine and rather poor skills in denying myself gratification

I think something like a Red Hill Estate or Hoddles Creek might be the go at my wedding!

The Mountadam is $25 at the local Dan’s. And this more like $35. But then that’s SA prices on those which I guess may be better.

Looks like I’ll be doing some chardonnay shopping with my friend in the near future. Thanks for the help everyone. After the amount I spend buying all the wines I want (sorry, need) I think I’ll be serving the old Queen Adelaide if anyone is stupid enough to want to marry me…

Thanks nam. I suspected such. Not really my style of chardy (I’m more a Macedon, Yarra Valley, Margaret River man (oh my god, that covers a lot of different styles(maybe I just don’t like too much malo)))
But was happy to drink it when provided anyway! A change is as good as a holiday. Well, so they tell me. I haven’t had a holiday for a long time. Doing a lot of Vic in september and looking forward to it. Thanks again all, and to Gary et al at Winorama for such a great, useful and fun site. Sometimes it gets it me thru my day

Just a quick update. My friend and I shared a 2004 Mountadam yesterday afternoon. I know the winery has been through a lot of changes, and owners, so was a little wary but could not locate the 2006 GW reviewed. Anyway, we both really enjoyed it for $25. As mentioned I’m not big on malo, but whilst it was certainly there it seemed balanced by good acid, grapefruit and lemon notes and excellent use of lees. Spicy french oak and cashews helped out too. Long time since I’ve really enjoyed a chardy with definite peach characteristics. Thanks for the tip Gary ( and my friend thanks you as well), although I’m not sure what you would make of it compared to the 2006?
