Tasting Notes and Australia and Variety and White and chardonnay and Pemberton

A year has passed since I wrote my note
But I should have known this right from the start
..and the message in this particular bottle is very good (cork excepted). It’s cooler and leaner than Stuart Copeland in a pair of Aviators circa 1979.
Light and delicate with green fruits, lemon, white peach, struck flint, a little butter menthol lift and fine clove spice oak. On the palate tight and refined with lime, white peach, hazelnut and a touch of butterscotch. Restrained and dry with a flinty texture and a little kiss of spicy oak. It has crisp clean acidity and a lovely sense of freshness and vibrancy. Finishes dry and crisp with a spice and crunchy green fruit aftertaste. Cool and classy.

You’ve nailed it. This wine is a good reflection of what was a very cool season for all of WA and it looks like it should age like a charm. Bill and Dan reckon that it is the best chardonnay that they have made.

I like the 2005 that little bit better but this is same same but different. Light, fresh and yum. More towards Chablis in style I’d suggest.

Hurrah for another advocate for the Picardy chardy. Seen this on a couple of occassions blind and often I was one of the few batting for it… exactly in the Picardy groove.

Yes. Some people won’t like the fact that it is thinner with green fruit - it is on the borderline for me but I ended up strongly in favour. Crisposity wins the day.

My first comment on this site… I have been a reader for some time and love the format.
I posted the below on another website a while ago… I was obviously quite excitable at the time but this is a fantastic wine.
I tried this next to the 2003 Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay and the 2003 Pierro Cardonnay and just about fell off the chair. The Art Series was just outstanding (as you’d expect) - subtle but powerful, long yet restrained. Think we may have copped a dud bottle of the Pierro - it was very limey and sharp - I’ve not had it before but it can’t be the wine that everybody raves about. The Picardy was obviously a younger wine but the depth and complexity of the palate and the smooth, long finish put this wine in the same class as the Leeuwin. This wine will be considered as such in years to come. Get some now before the price ctaches up with the quality.

Just finishing my bottle of this tonight. The 3 months since GW’s note has allowed the yellow melon to open more on the palate. It is very restrained but the green fruits are much more subdued that what Gary indicates. Although not lacking, it does not have the depth and power on the middle palate of the 2006 Shaw & Smith M3, but the finish is full of length, flint and finesse. “Cool and classy” is a great summary of this Chardonnay. Points-wise I find it hard to differentiate from the 2006 Shaw & Smith M3. 94/100 from me as well. I wish wines like this were in 1 litre bottles!

Just tried the 2007. Wowsers! Shall be going in when it is released later this year. Touch of butterscotch or as the missus said ‘peanut brittle’ but a beautiful lemony finish that lingers. Matched and maybe even pipped the 2007 Mosswood Chardonnay tried a day later.
Oh and do put in the 2006 in your Chardonnay tasting. I reckon it will be the little engine that could
cheers

I’m doing a vertical of every wine ever made by Picardy on 6 August - if I can make it.
