Tasting Notes and Australia and Great Southern and Variety and Red and shiraz et al

I grabbed this one out of the cellar to make sure my palate was in sane and good working order when I attended a vertical tasting of Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet. The notes are published in Winefront Monthly but I include this one here because a) I have a bit more to say and b) Mattinson did not publish my revised score and drinking window.
Some volatility (again). Raspberry jam, licorice, pepper, vanilla, pepper, rosemary, pepper and horsey overtones (but not in the bottle I opened from my own cellar). Spicy jam palate with alcoholic warmth and fine grained tannin. Super.
It reminded me of a big ripe Chateauneuf du Pape in many ways. Soft and jammy and lots of alcohol - which is why I point it quite highly. I wonder how it will age though - or more importantly - will it improve?

Hmmm - drinking one now and actually don’t think it will improve. The horsey pooey whiffs are now starting to overpower the nice cloves, 5 spice, black pepper nose. The palate lacks fruit intensity or structure. Finishes short, a bit metallic with some VA. Much better drinking a couple of years ago. Disappointing.

Hmmm. We have one bottle left in the cellar and one of the 98. Looks like they will be up for the chop. The 94 was a brilliant wine but probably never got better than it was at about six years of age.

Hmmm - drinking one now too (after seeing recent posts on brett in this one), good colour, nice cedary oak and black pepper, no sign of VA, after an hour or so there is a little whiff of horse hair, mid-weight palate, but fresh enough, the fruit is starting to struggle with the oak, but it’s still OK, no metallic aftertaste in this one, medium-length finish, still OK for a year or two on the basis of this bottle.

Agree the ‘94 was a fantastic wine - yeah you are probably right drank best in the early ’00’s. Reads like Brian’s bottle wasn’t as advanced as mine - proably wasn’t VA more just a very clipped finish on my bottle. Like your bottle , though the fruit does struggle - something earlier good years of the wine didn’t. Will finish my last 3 bottles over the next couple of years.

Popped the bark on the ‘99 based on the prior comments.Colour is just on the turn but still vibrant. Vegetal and warm spice aromas backed by black pepper. No VA or brett issues showing in this one. Certainly seeing French / Hermitage characters. This (pepper) comes through on the palate, moderate to fine grip from the tannins. Fruit is opening up after 10 mins but not looking like it will go any further. Drink now with Herb Crumbed Rack of Lamb (courtesy of visual stimulation from the Iron Chef). Regs O

Anyone tried the shiraz 01 recently? Like GW I liked the cab 01 lots, too much in fact - it’s long gone.
