Rockford Vintage Port 1997 Sunday, May 28 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Barossa Valley and Variety and Fortified

Initially quite shy – it didn’t really open up until the next day, and then showed sambuca and raisined fruits, five spice and cinnamon, apricots, alcohol and Christmas cake. It is a real delight to smell. The palate is rich, with liquored citrus fruits, lighter than expected, and a Cointreau finish. This isn’t a big lumbering port with dank sultana fruits, but fresher and brighter. The finish is sweet and silky (no heat at all) with a lingering trace of spice.

Good note. I suspect this the best of the 1996, 1997 and 1998 Rockford VPs released so far from an aging point of view, although I will cracj another 1998 soon to be sure. I remember the 1997 had a lovely, long structure.
I thought the 1996 a sheer delight on release. I could hardly tell it was a VP. Tried it recently and I don’t think it will get any better.
Kind regards,
Adair
