Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz 2003 Monday, Dec 12 2005
Tasting Notes and Australia and Pithy Comment and Variety and Red and shiraz et al
I had another bottle of this quite recently. I really just can’t see what all the fuss is about. It really is quite sweet and difficult to drink much of. That is my tasting note. I feel much better now I have that off my chest.

I havn’t tried this vintage yet..always enjoyed the last few but have seen a few negative comments about it. Maybe they dropped the ball with this one.

Liked the 98 and 99. Can’t remember much about 00-02.

Lifted nose, white pepper, plummy, spicy wine. Good weight and length. Juicy palate, well balnced but fruit dominated. Really tasty. 18/20 for me.
C/mon guys whats wrong with being a fruit slut from time to time - gets it out of your system and you move on.
Cheers

There is fruity and syrupy. This is too far gone.
I will have to bring some proper wines up to the Hunter shortly. Get you back on track.

Isn’t it nice to see many familiar names sensibly discussing wines!
FWIW, I don’t mind a glass of this wine, but I too find it too sweet to drink much of.

I agree with the overripe comments. I prefer the 2003 Moyston, although I would serve the Chalambar to a crowd.

Hada bottle of this on the weekend that I picked up for $13.50 at First Choice - next to 2005 stock, which is pretty ordinary. I thought this excellent and don’t understand at all the over-ripe comments and sweetness comments made here - it certainly walked all over a 2004 Torbreck Struie brought by a guest, which was certainly an over-priced and over-ripened stewey Barossan monster.
I thought it very brooding and well measured. I don’t like overy fruited wines in any case. One of those wines where 750mL is hardly enough. I was so happy with this that I bought all that were available.

I grabbed a few bottles of 03 a couple of years back for $5 in a bargain bin, was not overly impressed but put the rest away when seeing the huge scores it received. I hope they ( Halliday, Oliver) know something i dont.

Can’t remember the ‘99. The ‘01 was all rich black fruits with a robust tannin grip and dryish finish that was very pleasing. The ‘02 started out all weedy and I thought it was rubbish at first, so I left 4 bottles in the cellar for a couple of years and as usual, I was proven wrong….it blossomed very nicely into a well balanced medium weight wine. Tried the ‘03 and didn’t like it. Haven’t bought any since.

Had an 04 a couple of months ago after an online tasting of the 05. The 04 (didn’t much like it a year or two ago - all tannins, buried fruit) but it’s developing into a pretty good wine. The 05 reminded me of the 04 at a similar age.

There’s a lot of variation in responses here. A really polarizing wine it seems. Anyone else tasted recently? I still have 5 after buying 6 (prompted by JH and JO) and was very impressed with the first. Either it only appeals to a certain palate, or there’s a lot of bottle variation (I presume it’s made en masse).
