Stonier Chardonnay 2005 Sunday, Oct 8 2006
Tasting Notes and Australia and Mornington and Variety and White and chardonnay
A spanking new release from Stonier. The chardonnay is always a top value pick and a safe bet when you are cruising up and down the fridge at the bottlo going mmmmmm hmmmmmm mmmmmmmm while looking for something to have with dinner.
Aromas of melon, pineapple, spice and creamed honey with a touch of smoky reduction. On the palate flavours of melon, citrus, pineapple, honey, cream and spice. Slippery lightly creamy texture but with balanced bright acidity. It’s viscous but not fat or heavy. Spicy creamy finish. Lovely Mornington style chardonnay. You can safely add a couple of points if you love your malolactics.

I’ve always thought this wine great value. The Reserve is usually very special.

I quite enjoyed a number of bottles of Port Phillip Estate Chardonnay 04 (1 left) from the disposals shelves at the barn. Now a case or so of the Stonier Mornington Peninsula 04 has appeared so I picked up a bottle to try tonight. It’s still looking pretty fresh, a good straw colour with a slight green tinge. Bloody hell, it’s BIG. On the palate ripe, sweet chard fruit, a touch of cashew, some guava and with a bit of breathing finishes with a good length, some citrus acid and spicy oak. It’s viscous in the glass and in the gob as well.
I reckon I prefer the more elegant PPE(NO malo - the winery says so) but think the Stonier 04’s good enough to see if I can get a $ or 2 off the $13 price for a 6pk, maybe $3 for whatever stock remains. Thank you Coles, but the range and value has already been seriously diminished for serious wine drinkers.

I dont’ know why but I’m always disappointed with Stonier’s regular bottlings. I tried their 2006 Chardonnay with (faux) Japanese for dinner last week and it was just dull. Nothing to complain about and balanced enough but didn’t grab me at all. Felt it was almost almost like drinking a “table chardonnay” if there is such a thing. I’m drinking the 06 PN tonight and hope it jumps out at me more.

What’s your opinion of the Stonier 2004, Zhan? 3-4 years after vintage I thought it was very good+. Halliday rated the 05 94pts but I’ve not tried it.
Seems obvious you’d prefer the Reserve.

Hey Daz I don’t recall the 2004 Chardonnay but I do recall being generally disappointed with their regular Chardonnays, the 2006 included (unfortunately). I think the overarching problem i have is it lacks CHARACTER, which is why I made the comparison to table wine. That said, it’s not fair to underrate all their vintages based on 1 clear memory of 1 vintage. I did try the 06 PN last night and did thoroughly enjoy it for what it was — easy drinking, had a lovely nose after it was opened for an hour or so, nice tangy fruit. Great for a tuesday night! Must try their reserves hey…
