Stonier Reserve Pinot Noir 2006 Monday, Apr 28 2008
Tasting Notes and Australia and Mornington and Variety and Red and pinot noir
It’s often a funny business reviewing or trying to form an opinion of a particular wine. Sometimes, even after only the first sip, you have a firm one (opinion that is) and think you have it sorted, other times it’s hmmm well…more elusive and you dither a bit. What am I trying to say? Not quite sure but there’s certainly no certainties when it comes to this sort of thing - especially with Pinot Noir. And am I dithering again?
The light bright red colour that says Go! rather than Stop leads on to complex, multi-faceted aromatics of spicy red fruit/cherry, liquorice root, decaying leaves and some vanilla toffee oak. It’s just medium bodied, clean, light and fresh. Lithely tannic with spicy red fruits, fine oak and a long expansive finish. It’s another excellent example of just how good we are getting with this variety.

Agree with the elusiveness bit - you have almost captured the feeling, but just as you nearly did, it got away again….
Seriously though, had the same experience with a Pinot last night.

Gary
So were you thinking of marking it up or down?

I don’t know really. Yesterday was not one of my “days of strident manly purpose”. Like the wine a lot.

Spooky that you have reviewed this. I had this blind last week in a great line up. I rated it with the Bindi Block 5 2006 amongst others. I loved the licorice. The other spice I saw was cinnamon which probably relates to the oak. I thought the wine might even have been a bigger than usual Chambolle since the person who put the bracket on said they could be old world or new world and were from 2005 or 2006! In fact a Pommard 2005 in the same bracket looked bigger and I thought it may have been New World. The Stonier Reserve though is readily available and at a good price to boot. I would nudge the points up but agree with all the descriptors GW and should add that my management commanded me to go and buy some!!

There you go..I told you I was dithering. 95 it is then
And yes the licorice is lovely - and not the sweet black stuff but the fragrant essence type. You are clearly a taster of some renown.
