Tahbilk Viognier 2006 Sunday, Nov 11 2007
Tasting Notes and Australia and Nagambie Lakes and Variety and White and viognier et al
Fairly shortly I will be doing a vertical of Tahbilk Marsanne from 1999 through 2006 but in the interim here is another Rhone white.
Aromas of pineapple, apricot, lemon, musk and spice with some slightly gluey oak influence. Very nice to smell and a bit funky too but nothing over the top. On the palate full bodied with apricot, lemon and fresh pineapple, musk sticks, spice and some more savoury earthy flavours. Lightly oily but really quite fresh with a light phenolic grip and good acid balance. The alcohol intrudes with a bit of a mouthwashy sting and the finish is dry with lemon and spice to close. Love the flavours but the alcohol takes the edge off an otherwise good wine.

you should try and get some older marsanne.
Reckon it’s time for the label to be updated?
Put some wines in burg bottles etc. Great value wines though.

Tahbilk not longer found in Alberta. Friend of mine in Kentucky has a flight from `98 to present vintage.

Tahbilk Marsanne is almost a wine-drinkers’ icon in Aus. I buy the older ones and I buy the younger ones and drink them in short order. The 2000 vintage is one of the best young ones I’ve had.
I’ve also tried the Viognier from time to time which set my standard for the variety after a couple of very good+ ratings by Halliday. Gary, your rating is a bit curious given your mostly positive comments.
Oh well, my favourite whites from the Tahbilk offerings are usually the semillon and riesling anyway.

Rating is for that fact that it is a good wine spoilt by too much alcohol showing.
